The latest trend in paper crafting seems to be junk journaling. Creating Prayer Pockets and various journaling opportunities with a unique presentation of odds and ends.<br>
<br>
Truly "junk" journals and pockets are made from things that would normally be thrown away, like junk mail, scraps of paper and bits of ribbon and string. My next project may be more along these lines but today's pocket has a specific purpose so I chose to use scrapbooking and stamping things I had on hand.<br>
<br>
Now if you like a nice, neat, and tidy journal with numbered pages and lines, junk journaling may not be for you. This technique, and the resulting hodgepodge of pockets and tags tucked into coffee dyed journal pages with scraps of card stock and ephemera has really piqued my interest so I thought I’d give it a try.<br>
<br>
Here’s my first attempt...<br>
<img alt="" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-cNitZ2wHJSw/XDQZlEmhyKI/AAAAAAAAa7E/rMd8QK3fusUjP4kOl5lWeXQXJr159UauQCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D"><br>
This is the front my of my card.<br>
<br>
<img alt="" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zCKLoScGkHk/XDQZnDcLjOI/AAAAAAAAa7I/R_0tKcpCZNE95JjYhpsxKirPwkV2Jx-agCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D"><br>
This is the back, which probably makes this pocket style card a little confusing. Next time, I’ll just do a one sided pocket.<br>
<br>
<img alt="" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tT98SSG6KdY/XDQfylXTTCI/AAAAAAAAa9E/QYKtb8S1L8QtTn5jJMV9N5NpcJBrykU9wCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D"><br>
Here, you can see each of the individual tags, bookmarks, cards and notebook type inserts that give the style of card or journal its junky, interesting appeal. I had a lot of fun creating these one-of-a-kind mini journaling spaces but I imagine receiving one would be like a wee treasure hunt as you sort through all the various little treats tucked into folds and pockets. <br>
Gift cards, jewelry, money, bite sized candy bars, and lots of other tiny presents could also be added to the pages.<br>
<br>
The following video shows a little more of the thought/planning that went into my card. <br>
Let me know what you think. Please share your cards or ideas in the comments.<br>

I’ve been collecting all sizes of metal jello molds from the early years of the 1900s. They are cute, nostalgic and intrigue me with their charm.<br />
My first upcycled project using one of the molds I found at my Mom’s was a pincushion made from some vintage fabric, lace and a button from the button box I had spent hours sorting through as a child.<br />
<br />
This year, after looking at several ideas for creating Christmas ornaments out of little jello molds with bottle brush trees and glistening snow. I pulled out my stash and started playing.<br />
I had a few small wooden candle sticks, a metal stand from a paper company, various sizes of molds, and some wooden beads and bamboo skewers.<br />
To start, I used a nail to punch a small in the bottom of each mold.<br />
<img alt="" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5LigHCCWXEo/XBJFa6ZH0CI/AAAAAAAAaeY/IBSdyHc-WTAh73M7gl7L9QLTFoW5BAdlACHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" /><br />
Once I get into a project, I’m terrible at recording my progress or the process in pictures. This one was after sorting sizes, stacking and restacking the molds with beads in between as needed to keep the shapes from nesting too much. After getting them the way that looked best to me, I started by gluing the skewer into the base.<br />
<img alt="" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4wZG9VO2qsU/XBJFsUQxCdI/AAAAAAAAaek/dma7pR-TwQMlv9iq0uGXecGKw6WBrnLIgCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" /><br />
I didn’t glue every level but if the hole I’d punched in the tin wasn’t right in the center and that tier was tilty, a little glue helped keep things in line.<br />
At this point, I hadn’t given any thought to how I would finish off the top. A star seemed like the obvious choice, but what kind....?<br />
After digging through more stash, I found two tiny cookie cutters that seemed made for the job. One was an angel, perfect! The other a tiny gingerbread man! For the third tree, I was at a loss. This little silver finial looks great!<br />
<img alt="" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5SND6q7A7-4/XBJFuJgBXDI/AAAAAAAAaeo/FBvq33ICbfUaL-jUVNYq3gcE7lSoG_Z2gCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" /><br />
Here are the finished trees. They are still a little tilty in places but whimsy is what repurposing is all about so I think it works.</div>

With the holiday season approaching, I came across a tiny little dish with one dormant paperwhite bulb in it. After placing a few marbles in the bottom of the dish, I placed the bulb in the window and watched to see what would happen. After a week, this is how much it had grown!<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SpWfn0bNz68/XA_5X-02rZI/AAAAAAAAaZI/dFzp0r6dR6olH5vL9WKMGwtI-xj10wv8ACHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="">It was so exciting to see the brown bulb come to life and grow so quickly! So...of course I started looking at paperwhite ideas on Pinterest. There were lots of ideas and I quickly thought of some things I had on hand that I could use to create some lovely presentations to share with some folks this holiday season.<br>Several years ago I had picked up some very pretty, tall glass vases at a friends’s garage sale. They would be perfect for the tall blooms I expect from paperwhites.<p></p><p>I gathered all the things I had on hand, made a wuick trip to Lowe’s for the bulbs. I had only planned to make 3 vases full but when I bought the bulbs, they were 75% off. Of course I bought all that they had for a total of 40 bulbs. Each vase was big enough to hold 5 bulbs without crowding and, as it turned out, I had picked up 8 vases for $1 each. The bulbs totaled $13.25. The moss was left over, the river rocks were purchased for these vases but the glass beads were purchaed new but left over from another project. All in all, the cost of things purchased for my paperwhite project came to around $27... that’s just a little over $3 for each one! </p><p>As soon as I got home I spread everything out on the kitchen table and got to work. No...I didn’t stop to take before pictures. The project is pretty transparent...see what I did there?...so I think you can figure it all out.</p><p><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PH6_B8M8PG8/XA_-qlJKxiI/AAAAAAAAabQ/9B1gN4qakycJj7eT9a9yesY3icgsOzLMgCHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" alt=""><br></p><p>Here are the other 4 vases with glass beads instead of river rocks and moss. I love the earthy look of the natural materials but the sunlight shining through the sparkling glass beads is so pretty...especially for Christmas gift giving.</p><p>I don’t know if these bulbs will flower before Christmas or shortly after but I’m sure they will bring a spot of cheer to their new homes. </p><p>Here’s what they should look like...</p><p><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tM5foZrVro8/XBAEAprXSNI/AAAAAAAAabo/UrnbTHlhvRo_6JnO_r0KkSYm266DT-PGACHMYCw/%255BUNSET%255D" alt=""><br></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p>Sharonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10330008208876840127noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541541594755423362.post-79974070277232273272015-12-12T15:22:00.000-05:002015-12-12T15:22:02.999-05:00Saying Goodbye to the Last Pumpkins of Autumn<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It's fun to gather the bright colors of Autumn together to celebrate the season. And nothing says Fall like the bright orange of a beautiful pumpkin. This year we were gifted several large pumpkins and gourds to make my daughter's baby shower and later our side porch, especially inviting and homey.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yuIKKI-nLhs/VmxyCok1x8I/AAAAAAAAVII/HInYWXa2g1U/s640/blogger-image-1654297071.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yuIKKI-nLhs/VmxyCok1x8I/AAAAAAAAVII/HInYWXa2g1U/s640/blogger-image-1654297071.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
I added a few springs of bittersweet to the stacks of pumpkins, the old milk can and bench that sit side by side year round to add a delicate touch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4wVBDNphKk0/VmxyBjazjMI/AAAAAAAAVIA/WDI2RnQTURI/s640/blogger-image-1014327379.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4wVBDNphKk0/VmxyBjazjMI/AAAAAAAAVIA/WDI2RnQTURI/s400/blogger-image-1014327379.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
The tiny little pumpkins sitting on my mantle were decorated in a sort of henna fashion for the shower and mixed with gourds on each table. If I could dry them for future use, I would.<br />

<strong>Guidelines for Participation</strong></h3>
<ol>
<li style="text-align: center;">Please link up your blog post using the Linky widget below. If you are posting a recipe, only <a href="http://mindbodyandsoleonline.com/nutrition/what-real-food-is-and-is-not/" target="_blank">real food </a>recipes are permitted please. This means no processed food ingredients!</li>
<li style="text-align: center;">Please link the URL of your actual blog post and not your blogs home page. That allows future readers who find this post and go to your link to be able to find what they're looking for.</li>
<li style="text-align: center;">Please place a link back to this edition of Wildcrafting Wednesday at the end of your post. That way your readers can benefit from all the ideas too. This also helps out the other participants who are hoping to get more traffic to their blogs. If you're new to blogging here's what you do: Copy the URL of Wildcrafting Wednesday from your browser address bar. Then edit your post by adding something like, "This post was shared on Wildcrafting Wednesday" at the end of your post. Then highlight "Wildcrafting Wednesday", click the "link" button on your blogging tool bar, and paste the URL into that line. That's it!</li>
<li style="text-align: center;">Please only link posts that fit the blog hop description. Old and archived posts are welcome as long as you post a link back as described above. Please don't link to giveaways or promotions for affiliates or sponsors. That keeps our links valuable in the future since a link to a giveaway three months old isn't going to be worth browsing in three months time, but a link to an herbal tip will be.</li>
<li style="text-align: center;">Please leave a comment. :)</li>
<li style="text-align: center;">And bloggers, please check out the other posts and leave a comment for them too. :) I know that we would all love to hear from each other. :)</li>

Repurposed Solar light</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
If you read here often, you know that I like to make my mark on the repurposing/ junker/ packrat<span style="font-size: x-small;"> </span>scene<span style="font-size: x-small;"> </span>with some of my own ideas. During some of the power outages we experienced last winter, I had a few ideas about using solar lighting indoors and as creative outdoor lighting that goes beyond sticking a stake in the ground.<br />
<br />
<br />
Here's a link to some of those "coming out" of the pack rat closet posts...<br />
<a href="http://www.woodwifesjournal.com/2010/07/time-to-fess-up.html">Time to Fess Up</a><br />

<a href="http://www.woodwifesjournal.com/2012/12/my-junky-christmas-mantle.html">My Junky Christmas Mantle</a><br />
<br />
Now, you have to admit, I've made some useful and interesting things with some of my stash...at least that's what I keep telling myself as a way to justify my problem!<br />
<br />
Last year at a garage sale, I picked up a very pretty ceiling light with a crackle finish and a nice little knob on the bottom. I had no idea what I would do with it...I just liked it. Now if you've read any of those Pack Rats Anonymous posts, you know this is not unusual and, yes, my husband tried putting his foot down but there's too much junk on the garage floor!<br />
<br />
But as spring came around, I began to get a few inspirations about that globe. I had a large terra cotta flower pot with a design on it that I had never used... and I put the two together to make, in my opinion, a very nice Mother's Day gift for my mom. She has it on her porch and it gives a nice glow to an otherwise dark area in the woods on the mountain or pike, as we locals call it.<br />
<br />
It's assembly is a bit more involved than just putting the two together. <br />
First, I found a solar light that would fit through the small opening in the globe. <br />
Then I figured out the correct height for the light and used Plaster of Paris to give the pot some weight and keep the light in place. <br />
Next, I used some rope caulk to seal the joint between the pot and the globe in an attempt to keep water out. There are lot's of ways to create a better seal but I wanted something that I could take apart if the battery or entire solar light needed to be replaced in the future.<br />
After the globe was seated in the caulk, I tied a few pieces of burlap around the top of the pot as a finishing touch.<br />
<br />
Voila!<br />
<br />
Here's a shot after dark.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qXjfC8WkCmg/U7CVNcQwZCI/AAAAAAAAUuU/5NZjCl_u5F4/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qXjfC8WkCmg/U7CVNcQwZCI/AAAAAAAAUuU/5NZjCl_u5F4/s1600/006.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I made another one for my bff using a giant coffee cup and another style of frosted or white globe that I found at a thrift store, but alas, I was so excited to give it to her that I forgot to take a picture of it!<br />
<br />
I've been collecting pieces that I can use to create more of these Sonnen Licht (sunlight) repurposed lights to sell and gift...again, in an attempt to justify my pack rat tendencies! I'll try to remember to take pictures to share.<br />
<br />
So don't throw it away if you can give it new life!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-size: x-large;"><b>What's in your bug out bag?</b></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"><b>Do you keep an emergency preparedness bag ready to grab if something causes you to evacuate your home on short notice? What do you keep on hand for times like these?</b></span><br />
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>
I've added a new item to my emergency preparedness list...solar lights!<br />
Now I don't mean those expensive newfangled flashlights although I'm sure they are very handy. I'm talking about outdoor sidewalk lights. I picked up a dozen, 99 cent solar lights at Walmart while I was getting a few things before the last storm hit. <br />
When we got home, I pulled out all the tabs to activate the lights and was surprised to find that they already had a small charge and began to glow. I put all the lights in a small bucket that would hold the lights upright and set the bucket on the porch. Since the storm was already on her way, the skies were overcast and threatening heavy rain soon. That evening it was dark earlier than usual and I noticed a bright glow coming from the porch. All the lights in the bucket were brightly lit!<br />
We had a test run even though the power never went out. I placed a light on every other step so we could see to come down at night if the power was off. They were still lit in the morning and spreading plenty of light over the steps and the hall...like night lights!<br />
We have an iron chandelier that holds 4 taper candles. I removed the posts from the solar lights and with a little padding they stood up very well in the holders. This idea is so versatile! You can use them in place of candles during an outage without fear of fire! I'm going to keep my eyes open for deals on solar lights to add to my survival kit. <br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #990000; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Other ways to use these little renewable energy wonders:</span></b><br />
<br />
You could strap one or two on the outside of your backpack while hiking to provide light while you set up camp.<br />
<br />
You can make your own solar lantern from a canning jar by removing the post and clear cover from the light. Then, mount the solar panel with the actual light to the top of the jar.<br />
<br />
If you pack a survival kit for your family in case of emergency, be sure to include a small solar yard light in each one. Although they can't completely replace the directional light of a flashlight, they could provide adequate light for those in between times allowing conservation of flashlight batteries. If your family or group should be separated, it may help relocate each other in the dark.<br />
<br />
Include the small post, too because it could be used, in a pinch, for a number of things besides providing a handle for the light, like diverting water into a filter bottle, as a digging tool, etc. The inside of the post could store a bit of rope or other survival needs.<br />
<br />
Also, the little pointed stake that goes in the ground could be used as an anchor for a tent/shelter rope, as a digging tool, maybe even as a spear type point for fishing/hunting. <br />
<br />
Yes, solar lights use the power of the sun to gather energy but once you start thinking about it, the ideas for bringing them indoors, especially during a power outage or even just to conserve power, are phenominal!<br />

Let me be the first to introduce you to Mr. & Mrs.! I am sooo very happy for my oldest daughter and her new husband as they start their life together with plans. But, as a mom, I'm waffling between letting go and being proud of the young woman she's become and missing my little Goosie! I guess that's the reality of loving my girls so much.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She was a beautiful bride! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-quQXlT-3iyw/U2lUeWmiiAI/AAAAAAAAUoo/k8IVhBiYO7c/s1600/Tanner+wedding+photos+036.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-quQXlT-3iyw/U2lUeWmiiAI/AAAAAAAAUoo/k8IVhBiYO7c/s1600/Tanner+wedding+photos+036.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She's wearing a gown of her own design. When I was a little girl, there were two elderly spinster sisters who lived on the family farm in the country until they died. Before old age and cancer got them down, they would dress up in vintage dresses (I really wish I knew more about the history of these dresses!) and go out to tea or the Community Center for a picnic. When they passed away, their pretty dresses were up for sale at their estate auction. I bought two of them for my girls, who were just young at the time and loved to play dress up. They took good care of them and eventually out grew these vintage treasures. When Goosie was planning her wedding, she asked if I thought it would be okay to use the dresses to make her gown. I thought it was a great way to bring new life to something that would otherwise be forgotten in the closet! So she sketched a few designs and talked to a local seamstress about her ideas. We found some handkerchief fabric that matched the vintage cloth and she picked a pattern for the bodice form. After another trip to the seamstress, she knew what Goosie wanted and she set about bringing her idea to life! Goosie bought a few vintage doilies or scarves to overlay the top and create cap sleeves and a beautiful, sheer but lacey neckline. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The back of the vintage skirts were dressed up with a bustle style flounce, made from the handkerchief fabric. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm a heel. I am not the visual that my daughter is and has always been. She kept me up to date with all the developments and I had this picture in my mind of what she wanted her dress to be like. When I saw it for the first time, all I could think of was that it didn't match the picture in my head...and my response matched my confusion. I was afraid that it wasn't what she wanted and she was afraid to tell the seamstress. Don't get me wrong, it was beautiful but it caught me off guard. Plus, she grabbed a nude slip instead of a white one and the dress looked like it was two colors. Now, I should have trusted both my daughter and the seamstress not to send her off with a mismatched dress, but hey, like I said, I'm a heel...albeit a frazzled heel from all the wedding prep, but still.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When she put it on at the church for the wedding, I saw just how wrong I had been. She looked like an angel! And in my defense, the white slip made a world of difference in the color! But my initial reaction was't what she had hoped for and I'm afraid she thought I didn't like what she'd designed. My apologies for taking the joy from that moment by my awkward response.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
See how lovely she looked!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VKpykxPQHNY/U2v8-VqwYgI/AAAAAAAAUrc/jEongL3vosY/s1600/Tanner+wedding+photos+093.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VKpykxPQHNY/U2v8-VqwYgI/AAAAAAAAUrc/jEongL3vosY/s1600/Tanner+wedding+photos+093.jpg" width="198" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bMHfxiih5_E/U2v9EGkuuRI/AAAAAAAAUrk/egKn3_wWwBA/s1600/Tanner+wedding+photos+038.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bMHfxiih5_E/U2v9EGkuuRI/AAAAAAAAUrk/egKn3_wWwBA/s1600/Tanner+wedding+photos+038.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She chose neutral colors for her party with the bridesmaids being in dresses of their choice that they could wear again, accented with wood and leather. The fellows were in gray slacks and white shirts with leather shoes and belts and a silver tie to match the groom, who was wearing a gray suit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Y9QuGJmgeiA/U2v9VjWnF8I/AAAAAAAAUrs/y87ja1WJ1ao/s1600/DSC07615.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Y9QuGJmgeiA/U2v9VjWnF8I/AAAAAAAAUrs/y87ja1WJ1ao/s1600/DSC07615.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Of course, her little sister was the Maid-of-Honor. She took her responsibility seriously from throwing a fabulous shower, even when I had to go out of town for an emergency two days before, right up to the bachelorette and bridesmaids parties.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When my girls were small, I had a little craft business that included floral arrangements. We found some beautiful flowers and set about putting together the bridal bouquets and coursages, etc. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Kg5mXLCQJeo/U2vSfZOayVI/AAAAAAAAUpE/gN1m0KKjfII/s1600/Empty+Camera,+Bittit's+23rd,+more+wedding+271.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Kg5mXLCQJeo/U2vSfZOayVI/AAAAAAAAUpE/gN1m0KKjfII/s1600/Empty+Camera,+Bittit's+23rd,+more+wedding+271.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you read here often, you know that we're kinda a repurposing, upcycling sort of family. We wanted the wedding to be beautiful but thrifty, her own boho sort of style and yet not something that folks might think of as shabby either. So we, of course, turned to pinterest for ideas! After searching and making a plan, I went back to my roots a bit by creating some floral decorations from fresh leaves and some leftover bridal flowers. Here's what we came up with...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O681CVYjlHQ/U2vTJqWFbZI/AAAAAAAAUpU/ZwGaThD9iSU/s1600/Tanner+wedding+photos+011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O681CVYjlHQ/U2vTJqWFbZI/AAAAAAAAUpU/ZwGaThD9iSU/s1600/Tanner+wedding+photos+011.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

I made the garlands from fresh salal leaves and my old garland machine that I finally figured out how to use! We had the obelisks and decorated them to match. The curtains were borrowed from a friend who had them from her daughter's wedding. The large candle holder was a perfect find and we used some old wooden ones I had here at home to go with it. The lace tablecloth was crocheted for me years ago by a dear friend and neighbor who was like a grandmother to my girls. The wooden table was a family heirloom from Mr. Wood's mom.</span></div>

In the gym, she had the idea to move the bleachers to form a 90 degree angle with their table being in the corner surrounded by their attendants. In order to make it a little more candle light, the fellows suspended two old wooden extension ladders above the bridal party tables and the rag curtain we made for the shower hanging behind the bride and groom. A matching salal garland hung from the curtain. The ladders and garland were lit with strings of round lights that made a nice little glow for them. There were also battery candles in lanterns hanging from the bridal party tables and one on a shepherds hook behind the bride and groom, opposite a salal kissing ball.<br />

They were seated at a small metal patio table that I borrowed from my mom. Tables for family were lit by candles centered in salal wreaths. The other guests had the option of standing or sitting in random seating groups in order to make visiting easier.<br />

A friend of ours is a radio host. He and his wife made the reception unique by providing PA for all events and also setting up for karaoke which didn't take off as well as hoped but still made for some fun.<br />

June 4th, 2014 was the 4th anniversary of The Woodwife's Journal. It's funny how life doesn't always go in the direction you planned at the time you thought it would.<br />
<br />
It seems like every year when I think I'm going to take off and make this a great go to place for folks who share my interests, something happens that keeps me from doing that. So the only conclusion I can come up with is that now is not the time.<br />
<br />
I've finished my homeschooling career and have raised two beautiful, godly daughters who are such blessings to me. I thought this would be the year, but alas, not to be at this time. I directed a play that took up a lot of time last fall which i enjoyed greatly, My daughter got engaged and planned a spring wedding, no problem at all but still kinda took over the spring, my mom's illness has escalated and I'm caring for her, sometimes 24/7, until she's better. That's the new reality and where I'm living for now.<br />
<br />
But someday, when I grow up, I'm going to take this blog and my herbal career to the place God has planned for me. And until then, I will not pray for patience because I know He might test me...and test me....and test me until I'm ready for what He has in mind. He's like that you know...always a sense of humor.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, I'm sitting here, near the summit of the mountain where I grew up, just remembering and dreaming in between things I'm here to do. The mountain laurel is nearing it's blooming peak and the bees are buzzing, the birds singing, as gentle breezes blow me back to days of yore when this mountain forest was filled with indians, pirates, villians, princesses and knights...wait! I think I just heard someone calling me from that thicket!<br />

Granola<script>var pfHeaderImgUrl = '';var pfHeaderTagline = '';var pfdisableClickToDel = 1;var pfHideImages = 0;var pfImageDisplayStyle = 'block';var pfDisablePDF = 0;var pfDisableEmail = 0;var pfDisablePrint = 0;var pfCustomCSS = '';var pfBtVersion='1';(function(){var js, pf;pf = document.createElement('script');pf.type = 'text/javascript';if('https:' == document.location.protocol){js='https://pf-cdn.printfriendly.com/ssl/main.js'}else{js='http://cdn.printfriendly.com/printfriendly.js'}pf.src=js;document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(pf)})();</script> <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Granola...the hippy food that's become a yuppy treat bringing top prices for small bags of the good stuff.<br />
My answer? Make my own...a DIY...with the best ingredients.<br />
<br />
I love a little granola with my yogurt and fruit...my daughter likes hers with a scoop of yogurt, fruit and peanut butter with a little milk, like cereal...and of course straight from the bag in all it's crispy goodness is great, too.<br />
<br />
As I looked around the internet for a recipe that I could make with ingredients I had on hand, my taste buds were tempted by savory combinations but there always seemed to be something in the recipe that I didn't have on hand. And then I found Annalise and her blog <a href="http://www.completelydelicious.com/2012/10/how-to-make-your-own-granola.html">Completely Delicious</a>. She'd had the same problem I was having so she got creative...my kinda gal. Her post <a href="http://www.completelydelicious.com/2012/10/how-to-make-your-own-granola.html">How to Make Your Own Granola</a> is perfect for me! I'm sure granola making isn't rocket science or anything nearly as complicated as baking bread but I wanted to start out with a blueprint...know what I mean? <br />
So go check out Annalise's post and make your own granola like I did.<br />

Here's what's in this week's version of<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">What's in Your Pantry? Granola:</span><br />
(admittedly, I had just placed an order with a whole foods coop and my pantry was pretty well stocked with a few unique ingredients but it isn't always that way...next batch may be made with oats, raisins and walnuts.)<br />

I hate to admit this but I had made a double batch! Raid your pantry and make your own granola with whatever you find there.</span></span></div>

Everybody does it but no one likes to talk about it...the BM...Mr. Wood says something about logging...am I doing it often enough?...too often?...what should it look like?...they sell products that mask the smell so no one knows you've done the deed...but in reality, Everybody...everybody poops!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been looking at the Squatty Potty for a awhile now and when I saw that they had a few factory seconds available, I couldn't resist.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took the plunge...made the move...bought the stool... and now I'm asking you to check it out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The alignment of our body during this secretive time in our day makes all the difference in how effective the "movement" will be...and also how easy it will be on our bodies. Folks who often make this deposit without the help of modern plumbing fixtures are way ahead of the game because the posture necessary to perform this natural task in "au naturale" conditions puts everything in the right place and alignment, with no internal bends or kinks, to impede the evacuation required for a thorough elimination.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Enter the Squatty Potty bringing you closer to a perfect posture for the healthiest elimination.</div>

I sure do. Mostly when I'm feeling blue or at what I imagine to be that particular time of the month. I say imagine because now that I'm perimenopausal, I'm never sure when or if that time is coming. Whatever.<br />
<br />
This post is about yesterday, when I was here all alone and thinking about a bazillion things that weigh on my mind but only stay long enough to stir things up in there before they disappear, making room for one more fleeting worry that pokes at me like an annoying child. Anyway, I NEEDED something chocolate and nothing else would do.<br />
<br />
I rifled through the cupboard and found some oatmeal. Now, if you think like I do, that immediately said, "No Bake Cookies" to me! I got out my ingredients, raw milk and organic evap. cane juice, organic cocoa powder, homemade vanilla, organic oatmeal, amish butter, peanut butter...with all these whole food ingredients I shouldn't feel too guilty about that should I? <br />
<br />
But after the chocolaty goodness began to waft up to my eager nostrils, I did feel guilty. So I started thinking...how can I make these better for me?<br />
<br />
Aha! Things tend to be a little slow moving at times and so I decided to make a kinder, gentler, more "encouraging" NoBake...a geriatric version, if you will. I try to get at least a 1/4 cup of Smart Bran in my cereal or yogurt most days. So I substituted 1 cup of Smart Bran for 1 of 3 cups of oatmeal. By doing this, the normal recipe seemed to be very dry...and cardboard like...and this morning, rather cement like. So I put them all back in the pot, added a little more milk and butter and melted them down to goo again. The texture is much better...now I can enjoy them with less guilt and hey, when you NEED chocolate, you don't really need the added guilt, right!?<br />
<br />
Here's my recipe:<br />
<br />
<a class="printfriendly" href="http://www.printfriendly.com/" onclick="window.print();return false;" style="color: #6d9f00; text-decoration: none;" title="Printer Friendly and PDF"><img alt="Print Friendly and PDF" src="http://cdn.printfriendly.com/pf-button-both.gif" style="-webkit-box-shadow: none; border: none; box-shadow: none;" /></a><br />
<b><u>"Encouraging" Geriatric NoBakes</u></b><br />
1/2 + 1/8 cup butter<br />
1/4 cup cocoa powder<br />
2 cups evap cane juice<br />
1/2 + 1/8 cup cup raw milk<br />
Stir well over medium heat. Boil 2 minutes<br />
Add:<br />
1 tsp vanilla<br />
1 cup Smart Bran<br />
2 cups regular oatmeal<br />
1 generous dollup of peanut butter.<br />
<br />
Drop by spoonfuls onto wax paper or just eat them out of the pan...either way.<br />
<br />
Now if I could just add something to help me remember what I was doing before this all started.<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My eldest daughter is engaged! The story is sweet and it's clear to see God's hand moving in both of their lives! <span style="color: #37404e; line-height: 18px;"> </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #37404e; line-height: 18px;">My Goosie's getting married to a wonderful, godly fellow who loves her very much. He is everything a mom could ask for her daughter and I'm gonna have a son! God is good. </span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #37404e; line-height: 18px;">It's interesting the way God brings you to the perfect place and time to reveal something you've been waiting for all your life. Ben talks a little about the way this happened in his newsletter below.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #37404e; line-height: 18px;">The newsletter shown below is from my daughter's new fiancé regarding their engagement and his plans for the mission field. Ben has been raising support for his ministry and had planned </span><span class="text_exposed_show" style="color: #37404e; display: inline; line-height: 18px;">to return to South Africa in early 2014 but now they will begin raising the necessary funds to go to the field as a couple. Please pray about this. Your support would be greatly appreciated in prayer and/or financial means.</span></span></div>

<br />
How do you like to do your Christmas Shopping?<br />
Will you venture out into the utter mayhem on Black Friday to fight your way through the crowds of folks who, just the day before were thankful for what they have, but are now aggressively shoving and racing to grab all the things they want? Nothing wrong with that if you like that sort of thing.<br />
<br />
It's really not my cup of tea and it steals my holiday joy.<br />
So, I'll be shopping from the comfort of home taking advantage of free shipping and a warm cup of coffee while nibbling Thanksgiving leftovers.<br />
<br />
If you like the sound of that better than Black Friday chaos, I'd like to ask a favor...<br />
While you're searching through Amazon for that perfect gift or even a gift card, would you consider using my link to begin your search? As an affiliate, I'll earn a little to support my work here at the Woodwife's Journal and you won't feel even a penny increase in your cost! I'd like to say <b><i><span style="color: #990000; font-size: large;">thank you</span></i></b> in advance if you do because I really appreciate your help!<br />
<br />
Don't forget to SHOP LOCAL to support your friends and neighbors! There are plenty of small businesses that offer wonderful gift ideas, some of them are even hand crafted! Take advantage of your local artisans, crafters, bakers and farmer's by shopping local this holiday season.<br />

Gather around the radio and use your imagination to transport you to another time and place. They offer stories for all ages. It's hard to say which ones are our favorites because the classic choices are great! Little Women, The Chronicles of Narnia, Ann of Green Gables, A Christmas Carol, Les Mis, The Secret Garden, The Screwtape Letters, Oliver Twist and many more...they all come alive with a full cast of voice actors...often ones you'll recognize from the big screen like John Rhys-Davies and Andy Serkis. just click on the rolling carousel to enter Amazon.<br />
Enjoy!<br />
<br />
There are other affiliate links shown on the Woodwife's Journal for purchases through Mountain Rose Herbs, Tropical Traditions, LearningHerbs.com and Vintage Remedies. As promised, I'm sharing a couple small herbal things that happened in the Woodwife's kitchen this week.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's my basket of herbs from the kitchen garden just before the last frost.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-th5GP_bHRsM/UnvRGfIMVkI/AAAAAAAABrE/4RGx-bl-Pic/s1600/gift+boxes+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-th5GP_bHRsM/UnvRGfIMVkI/AAAAAAAABrE/4RGx-bl-Pic/s320/gift+boxes+003.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love to stand by the stone bed and smell the aroma of the herbs in the morning dew. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That's not the time for harvesting but it's peaceful and soothing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rosemary, Lemon Thyme, Horehound and Sage were standing proudly in the crisp air. I gathered them later when the dew was gone and brought them into the kitchen. It smelled wonderful and I needed to find some way to capture their fresh goodness.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #6aa84f; font-size: large;"><b>Lemon Thyme Water</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The first thing I made was a gallon of lemon thyme water which sat on the western window sill catching as much sun as it could. Herb water is so refreshing! Just drink as is or pour over ice to drink in the goodness!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P6JJNRcJJsE/UnvRGv3Cy0I/AAAAAAAABrk/yQ67Zevt9Kg/s1600/gift+boxes+004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P6JJNRcJJsE/UnvRGv3Cy0I/AAAAAAAABrk/yQ67Zevt9Kg/s320/gift+boxes+004.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next, I pulled out a thrift store treasure I'd picked up a few weeks ago and gave it a good washing. It was an interesting ice cube tray with several cylindrical cube tubes open on one end with a removable cap on the other. After allowing it to dry and snapping on the cap, I snipped my rosemary and thyme into shorter sticks and packed them into each tube with a sliver or two of fresh garlic. Next I covered them with olive oil. After covering the tops with plastic wrap (yikes) I put the tray in the freezer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6TBSAathCTc/UnvRGVWwIsI/AAAAAAAABrc/6kvTFFLJMp4/s1600/gift+boxes+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6TBSAathCTc/UnvRGVWwIsI/AAAAAAAABrc/6kvTFFLJMp4/s320/gift+boxes+001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's what they looked like after freezing.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GFewqvSHTTc/UnvRGite7fI/AAAAAAAABro/60iHHPuJb5U/s1600/herb+cubes+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GFewqvSHTTc/UnvRGite7fI/AAAAAAAABro/60iHHPuJb5U/s320/herb+cubes+003.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The advantage of having a removable cap on one end is being able to push one or two herb cubes out of the tray at a time with out melting the oil much.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pk3jmXwlqi4/UnvRG1v38aI/AAAAAAAABr4/XsyQ3xLamAQ/s1600/herb+cubes+005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pk3jmXwlqi4/UnvRG1v38aI/AAAAAAAABr4/XsyQ3xLamAQ/s320/herb+cubes+005.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now I'm all set to cook up my favorite dish with herb, olive oil and garlic all in one!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So here's what's for lunch...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c2bCgDLJ940/UnvRHHjupFI/AAAAAAAABr0/cfXdDLhr5Hw/s1600/herb+cubes+008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c2bCgDLJ940/UnvRHHjupFI/AAAAAAAABr0/cfXdDLhr5Hw/s320/herb+cubes+008.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With a little dollup of yesterday's batch of sour cream and I'm all set...Yummy!<br />
<br />

My desk was right next to his and I watched as the disease slowly wore this big man down. His outlook was such an encouragement to me and I feel blessed and very sad to have been so close during this time. And how silly to be thinking about myself. He was very open about his journey and shared some of the special foods and alternative treatments that were suggested.<br />
<br />
One was a coffee enema. What!? Amazed, I had lots of questions and decided to try one on myself. It was the most energetic 3 days or 72 hours of my life even though I think I was only able to sleep for about 4 of them! After the initial shock, though, I have to admit that I felt great. Of course being mid twenties and fairly healthy, I wasn't battling any huge mountains either. So after satisfying my curiosity, I put it out of my mind. <br />
<br />
My friend worked hard and had the support of a very caring, loving wife and daughters. His struggle eventually kept him at home and we only had a few updates during his last few months because the family was so focused on making him comfortable and caring for his needs that they barely had time to think of anything else. I'm sorry to say that the cancer won that battle. RIP John.<br />
<br />
But now that I'm older, I'm thinking about these things a lot more. So when I saw this article about <a href="http://www.mygutsy.com/the-ultimate-liver-detox-coffee-enemas/">Coffee Enemas</a>, I wanted to know all about them. The article is written by a gal on the GAPS diet who was skeptical of this liver detox method...until she tried it. She shares a lot of info and answered a lot of my questions. The thought of a redo is looming in my near future. Of course, nearly 30 years later, I'm facing a few more mountains now.<br />
<br />
Read what she has to say and decide it this is something you think might be helpful in your health journey. <br />
<br />
She also shared a link to a colonics page that shows this <a href="http://www.colonicsbykathy.com/chart.html">amazing chart</a>. <a href="http://www.colonicsbykathy.com/chart.html">Here's the link</a> and the chart.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://www.colonicsbykathy.com/images/therapy-chart-large.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Is this news to you? It was for me! And the part about how the coffee gets from your colon to your liver... fascinating! Check it out.<br />

Good Morning! It's a crisp Fall morning here in Central PA! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The majority of leaves have already come down and are blanketing our lawn with their tapestry of color. I'm not really sure why folks are in such a hurry to rake this splash of color to the curb.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Its feels like a Chai kinda morning so I'm heading to the kitchen to make a batch of Chai or maybe I'll just cheat and mix up some Oregon Chai and relax for a bit before starting my day. <br />
Have you seen the new Oregon Chai tea bags? Love them!</div>

After my errands this morning, I'm thinking of preparing to make a couple batches of soap. I'm really pleased with the Lemon Poppy Seed that I made last month. It's really refreshing, clarifying and leaves a squeaky clean feeling. The poppy seeds are exfoliating but I think they're a little rough for anything besides cleaning dirty hands. We're working around it in the shower so if you see a little speck in our hair, it's probably a poppy seed. Still, it's great at the kitchen sink because the lemon neutralizes odors, too.</div>

Many thanks to my friend, Kelly, who took these great photos of my "bakery" display!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was so much fun pulling together vintage baking pans, etc.from my stash. I used an old bread box, some bread pans, a square angel food cake pan, a fruit cake mold and an industrial multiloaf bread baking pan, along with other pieces that worked well. This method also made set up and tear down easier because I could "load" the pieces at home, set them in a box and go! Here's hoping it all works as well next time!<br />
It's great when I can incorporate my junkin' with my other jobs!</div>

<strong>Guidelines for Participation:</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. Please link up your blog post using the Linky widget below. If you are posting a recipe, only <a href="http://mindbodyandsoleonline.com/nutrition/what-real-food-is-and-is-not/" target="_blank">real food </a>recipes are permitted please. This means no processed, packaged, or refined food ingredients!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. Please link the URL of your actual blog post and not your blogs home page. That allows future readers who find this post and go to your link to be able to find what they're looking for.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. Please place a link back to this edition of the blog hop in your post. That's it! If you prefer, you can grab the button below and insert it at the end of your blog post. Either way is acceptable! :)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. Please only link posts that fit the blog hop description. Old and archived posts are welcome as long as you post a link back as described above. Please don't link to giveaways or promotions for affiliates or sponsors. That keeps our links valuable in the future since a link to a giveaway three months old isn't going to be worth browsing in three months time, but a link to an herbal tip will be.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. Family friendly posts only.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
6. Please leave a comment. :)</div>

<br />
Pain! Unbearable or annoying, from arthritis or over exertion, and anywhere in between, can be the cause of lost sleep, irritability, loss of opportunity, or just make you miserable! Pain...muscle pain...joint pain...we've all had it at one time or another. My husband and youngest daughter were in a head-on collision about 7 years ago. Both suffered neck trauma that has resulted in repeated visits to physical therapists and chiropractors after being told by doctors that it is pain they will both have to live with. So the decision they have to make is whether or not the pain they have is enough to keep them from enjoying life. As my daughter, now 16, says, "Mom, I have the pain whether I'm moving or still. I may as well do things I enjoy." My husband, on the other hand, doesn't really have a choice about working so it makes his life a bit harder because once he's dealt with the pain all day, he's exhausted and mostly doesn't have the energy to devote to strenuous activity around the house with chores which only makes things worse!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.woodwifesjournal.com/p/herbal-medicine-chest.html"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" src="http://i1041.photobucket.com/albums/b411/tgw9020/WoodwifesJournal-2.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Now I'm not a doctor, but I do have a bit of herbal knowledge so I thought maybe I could come up with some sort of homemade remedy that would help both of them deal with the discomfort of always being in pain. As a result, I'm happy to report that my creation has helped my family as well as friends, my daughter's soccer team and others to handle and/or heal all sorts of muscle/joint pain resulting from injuries to arthritis. I can't make any medical claims but all the ingredients were chosen based on research and empirical evidence. It's worked for everyone who's tried it with rave reviews.<br />
<br />
At a recent craft fair at our church, I sold some to a gal who works with horses. After reading the label, she asked if I thought it could help ease the pain from her injured knee. She bought a small travel size and took my card. A few hours later, a friend was passing her table and heard her exclaim to her friend, "I bought this pain stick from that girl over there and put it on my knee. It's helping already!" Shortly after that, she came back and bought 3 large tubes! The proof of its efficacy is in the repeat business!<br />
<br />
Much as I'd love to keep this all to myself and sell it to supplement our income (contact me if you'd like to buy a Pain Stick), I feel like there are folks who may want to make their own. You can find the basic recipe for a salve or balm <a href="http://www.woodwifesjournal.com/2011/01/herbal-medicine-chest-herbal-salves.html">Here</a>. <br />
<br />
As I mentioned, the firmer texture needed to use this recipe in a twist up tube that makes application easier, requires a little more beeswax than an ointment or salve.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Pain Stick</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span> To make your own pain stick, you can order empty twist up deodorant style tubes or save your old ones. Be sure to clean and sterilize before reuse.<br />
<br />
<i><b>(You'll need the following ingredients which you can purchase from Mountain Rose Herbs by clicking the affiliate link at the end of this post. Thank you for supporting my work here by using this link.)</b></i><br />
<br />
3/4 cup Castor Oil (Palma Christi or Hand of Christ, please use USP) You can read more about Castor oil's healing benefits <a href="http://www.woodwifesjournal.com/2010/11/castor-oil-packs.html">here</a>.<br />
1/4 cup Grapeseed Oil (Castor oil is a very healing oil with a higher viscosity. I've added Grapeseed oil to the recipe because it is healing as well as easily absorbed to help carry the relief to the problem faster)<br />
<br />
1/4 cup Unrefined beeswax<br />
<br />
1 tsp each of the following essential oils<br />
fir needle<br />
peppermint<br />
eucalyptus<br />
rosemary<br />
<br />
1/2 tsp camphor<br />
<br />
1/2 tsp cayenne powder<br />
<br />
1 tsp emu oil<br />
<br />
1 Tbsp menthol<br />
<br />
Follow the instructions listed <a href="http://www.woodwifesjournal.com/2011/01/herbal-medicine-chest-herbal-salves.html">here</a>.<br />
Pour into tubes and allow to cool. Be sure to label for future identification.<br />
<br />

My friend, Kelly, has a new camera and she's becoming a talented photographer. During the Grand Opening at Stew's Brew Coffeehouse, she photographed my display.<br />
If you're wondering where the name for this blog and my shop originated, <a href="http://www.woodwifesjournal.com/p/what-is-woodwife.html">click here.</a><br />
<a href="http://www.woodwifesjournal.com/"><img alt="" aria-busy="false" aria-describedby="fbPhotosSnowliftCaption" class="spotlight" height="266" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/1012426_10201675586311885_1802966027_n.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
What's on the menu? A quaint vintage child's chalkboard shares this list for today. I decided to go with a bakery theme so I used and old commercial bread baking pan that holds four loaves to display some of my soaps.<br />
<img alt="" aria-busy="false" aria-describedby="fbPhotosSnowliftCaption" class="spotlight" height="266" src="https://sphotos-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/971728_10201675585871874_1336380147_n.jpg" width="400" /><br />

Soap Nuts! Love 'em! This square angel food cake pan was perfect for soap nut kits.<br />

I don't know about your kitchen but we have fruit flies all over ours. I opened the toaster oven the other morning and was greeted by a small cloud of busy fruit flies. What they were after in the toaster oven is beyond me! <br />
<br />
But here's a really efficient fruit fly trap that's really catching a lot of those little buggers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-75Oxd808is4/Ud00BAK7dxI/AAAAAAAABgE/4PubPF5KfTs/s1600/Fruit+Flies+004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-75Oxd808is4/Ud00BAK7dxI/AAAAAAAABgE/4PubPF5KfTs/s320/Fruit+Flies+004.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I can't take credit for this idea but I can't remember where I saw it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've tried using vinegar with a drop of dish soap in it to break the surface tension and it worked alright but I always felt like there were a lot of flies lurking around the outside that never really made the commitment to light on the vinegar to take a sip.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Problem solved!</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br />
</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Simply add about 1/2" of vinegar to a jar.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Add a drop of dish soap.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Add a piece of fresh fruit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Make a paper cone with a fruit fly sized hole in the bottom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(I used a half sheet of printer paper split vertically)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The cone must fit the top of the jar snugly so the flies can't crawl out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I taped mine to the top of the jar in two placed to avoid any warping from the high humidity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So they crawl in the hole at the bottom of the cone to get to the fruity vinegar and can't find their way out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just look at all the flies inside!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
